What Your Nails Say About Your Health

Our bodies are magnificent systems that seamlessly function over the years. In fact, it is so fascinating that they can even communicate to use if there are any health problems we are experiencing.


For example, the state of your nails can show signs of the state of your health, and whether you should visit a doctor. Let’s take a look at some signs you should pay attention too.

Pale nails

If you notice that your nails are pale, you should definitely go and pay a visit to the doctor. It might be a sign that your body is struggling with either anemia, liver disease, or malnutrition. It is a bad sign that you should address as soon as possible.

White nails

This is a different state than having pale nails. If your nails are clearly white, you should immediately visit a doctor to get treatment. They are a clear sign that the liver is going under a lot of stress, and it is likely that you are suffering from a form of hepatitis.

Yellow nails

Yellow nails can mean several different things. But, in a higher number of cases, it is a simple fungal infection. Pay a visit to the doctor’s and find out what the problem is, get a prescription, and you will easily be able to handle it.


Keep in mind though, thyroid disease, psoriasis, or lung disease can also cause the nails to go yellow. Therefore, while you are at the doctor’s office, do a regular checkup of your whole body, to remove any doubts of a different condition.

Bluish nails

If you notice that your nails are going blue, it is a good idea to stop smoking and get your lungs checked. It is a sign that your body is not getting enough oxygen. In some cases, it also shows some problems with the circulatory system, especially the heart. Simply visit a doctor, and get these two things checked.

Rippled nails

If you notice ripples on your nails, it is a good idea to visit the doctor and get your health checked. It might be a sign that you are facing inflammatory arthritis or early signs of psoriasis. It is better to find out what the problem is so that you can take action on time.

Split or cracked nails

This can be a sign of either a fungal infection, especially if you notice yellowish edges on your nails. But, it can also imply problems with thyroid function. If you notice that your nails are breaking often, it is a good idea to visit the doctor and have your body checked.

Dark lines under a nail

If you notice this symptom, it is definitely a time to visit the doctor and have your skin checked. In many cases, it is a sign of melanoma, a very dangerous type of skin cancer.

Gnawed nails

For many people, this is simply a bad habit. But a habit that can actually be a symptom of some other type of a problem. If you feel that you cannot stop, it is time to pay a visit to the doctor and see what steps you can take. This is usually related to OCD or anxiety problems.


If you notice any of these signs, don’t be alarmed. Calmly visit the doctor and listen to what he or she has to say. There are plenty of nail conditions that are not related to any health problems. Simply visit the doctor to have everything checked, and, whatever you do, don’t panic in the whole process.
